WLAN
(wireless local area network) enables stationary
wireless communication. Technology
is based on IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11a, IEEE
802.11g standard and its versions, operating
at 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency, intended for
public usage. These frequencies enable gross
speed of up to 54 Mb/s.
Mobile telecommunications’ operators and
internet providers (e.g. Swisscom, T-mobile,
AOL, T-Online) represent the majority of WLAN
network providers. Mobile telecommunications’
operators build upon compatibility between
present data transfer technologies (e.g. GPRS),
WLAN and the 3rd generation of mobile telecommunications.
On the other hand, internet providers wish
to enable users a wide-range access to the
internet and its services outside their homes
and offices as well.
